What is classified as an emergency vehicle and what does it need to make it stand out

The definition of an emergency vehicle would probably be something like this ‘any vehicle that is authorized or designated to respond to an emergency’. That sounds simple enough but all kinds of people would run and operate emergency vehicles on their fleet. The immediate ones that spring to mind are the most obvious such as police, ambulance and fire vehicles. There is however far more vehicles that could be used in emergencies than those few. emergency vehicles could operate on land, sea, high ground or in rough terrain so the range and variety is huge.

A bicycle could be an emergency vehicle and indeed some police departments have officers on bicycles. That may seem a strange mode of emergency transport but they are highly effective in crowded cities where road traffic can be almost at a standstill for hours at a time. A bicycle could get to a scene far quicker than a police cruiser and therefore respond to an emergency situation. A bicycle can maneuver and travel down the narrowest of ally’s giving the officer an advantage over other modes of emergency transport.

A boat could also be an emergency vehicle and indeed they are and the coastguard and other agencies will use them. There are mountain rescue vehicles and search and rescue vehicles along with recovery vehicles that can all be classed as emergency vehicles. You get the idea of just how many different types there are and we haven’t even gone into the more specialist areas such as terrorist response, drug enforcement, SWAT and bomb disposal units! The list of vehicles that could be used in emergencies is vast but they all have one thing in common, lighting, markings and badges that distinguish them and their purpose.

If you do come across any kind of emergency vehicle, you will know its purpose and why it is likely to be there. Most emergency vehicles will have an identifier on them stating what agency they are and it’s also likely to have some very high visibility markings to help it be seen at night. Most vehicles will have some lighting ranging from a full width lightbar on a vehicle top to a set of lights on a bicycle. What most vehicles will also have is some form of audible warning such as a siren. All vehicles will have some form of identification from a number plate to an id number.

emergency vehicles will always be needed and all forms of vehicles will have a place in the emergency services world. The smallest to the larges emergency vehicle will all respond with utmost haste to emergency situations and will always be the first responders to a scene. An emergency vehicle will always be immediately recognizable as such by its markings, visible warnings, lights, sirens and normally its occupants and drivers. Hopefully you will never need any kind of emergency vehicle to come to your aid but if you do, you will know when it’s there.
