Sprockets – Spinning the World According To Your Needs

Sprockets are significant equipment used in all types of vehicles or machineries for smooth and frictionless functioning. They are nothing but wheels that come with teeth to align chains or other such perforated material for proper performance in rotary motion. Their wide range of application areas range from cycles, tracked vehicles to film, paper and conveyor belts.

Well you might ask, what is the difference between these sprockets and pulleys? The answer is simple, while the former has teeth the latter do not and is rather very smooth. Also unlike gears, these are never meshed together directly in any machinery. Moreover, gears are used only in linear motion e.g. in track, tape whereas sprockets are used in rotary ones. In Cycles:

Sprockets are integral to cycles. They are used along with bicycle chains for letting it move forward. You can modify the overall gear ratio of the chain drive in cycles by changing the tooth counting their teeth. This is the idea on which all cycling bikes are based on for making them run uphill as well as on a flat road whenever necessary.

In Tracked vehicles

Caterpillar tracked vehicles use them for proper movement. Known as the drive sprockets, they are in fact the backbone of these types of vehicles (like artillery tanks etc). They can be positioned at the front, or back of the vehicle. Some users also use them on both the sides, whereas others use a third sprocket, which is elevated to drive the track.

Film and paper

Sprockets have found their use in movie projectors and movie cameras as well. They offer great benefit in the process of film transport. Its wheels engage film perforations in the film stock. Similarly, they are also used to feed punched tape and paper in some computer printers.
